MY FMIL is pushing for fake flowers because they are so much cheaper. She suggested Michaels or AC Moore. Does anyone have any advice on using fake flowers? Thanks! Sonya

I didn't use them myself, but other brides have used afloral.com to order fake flowers.

I ordered real flowers in bulk online and DIY'ed myself.  That is a less expensive option too.  But, it does take a lot of time the day before the wedding...  fake flowers can be done weeks before hand.   flowersandfreshness.com and fiftyflowers.com.

efavormart.com has them as well.  I didn't order flowers from them, but I did order some other things.  Just know that whatever color is pictured is what you really will get regardless of the description.  I ordered chocolate satin and organza ribbon in two different styles and assumed that the picture on one was just off because they both said chocolate, but it wasn't.

I used fake flowers for all my bouquets.  You can get them done way ahead of time, and if you are worried they won't look real, I know Michael's has ones that look real, not like the traditional fake flowers.

I have purchased some from afloral.com as well, and a lot from Hobby Lobby. They have some that are great quality and a good price. They were half off fairly often.

Is your FMIL paying for the flowers? Don't let her bully you into doing something you don't want to do. I had family pushing for all silk and some for all real. I went with real for the bouquets, bouts, church decor, pew bows, and corsages. All of our centerpiece and reception flowers are silk.

Also, tell your FMIL she is not 100% correct. High quality silk flowers can be more expensive than real. A lot of people in the south buy very nice silk flowers during the summer because they hold up better in outdoor weddings and look better for pictures than real because the real would droop and wither in the heat.

Another perk about silk flowers is that you can sell them to other brides her on TK classifieds after you're done with them, whereas real ones will die!

There are HUGE differences in the craftmanship and the price of silk flowers. Generally, you get what you pay for. For a higher price you can get more realistic reproductions. Look for wired petals, leaves, and branches. Check if you can bend and shape them to look life-like. Sometimes petals and details are even hand painted. You should be able to find ones like this at Michaels but stop and visit some florists, too. Although their focus is on fresh flowers, my best friend was able to get good quality silk flowers from our local florist!

Another tip is to try to buy stems with several smaller blossoms instead of one big blossom at the top. Also great if it features more foliage and some buds. It will be MUCH easier for you to create a full bouquet with minimal effort.

Just avoid the shabby, cheap-looking flowers. They will stick out like a sore thumb.

We are using artificial flowers because they don't die and I have allergies. I wouldn't say they were really much cheaper....any real quality ones are going to be almost as much as real flowers. The biggest way they can save you money is if your taste is for exotic/expensive flowers like orchids and calla lillies....those are cheaper than buying real ones! Don't let FMIL bully you though either way. Do what YOU want to do. If they are paying for the wedding...tell them to give you your budget and YOU will decide where cuts need to be made! Good luck! :)

I'm really not convinced the fake ones are cheaper either.  I think we're going to order our flowers from Sam's Club and make the bouquets, centerpieces, etc... ourselves a day or two before the wedding.  They have great bulk prices and I know other people who have used them and have been really pleased with their quality.  Good luck and try to keep in mind the day isn't about the details, it's about your love and the commitment you're making to each other!! That's what I'm trying to remember when I feel like I could drown in the details!

I'm using origami paper flowers! Paper comes in just about every colour and neat patterns.

Going silk that looks real isn't going to save you money.  Stems of quality silk flowers often times cost more than a stem of a live flower.  I also think that no matter how "real" they look, they still look fake- and to me, that's tacky.  Maybe it's my background as a florist.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.

I agree, they aren't much cheaper. FI and I looked into both. Actually are saving a little bit of money from buying real flowers from a grocery store and making the centerpieces ourselves the night before. The only advantage we found to fake is that they can be prepared ahead of time.

We are doing fakes for all of the decor, and getting real ones for bouts and bouquets.
This is mainly because it's really helpful to me to be able to work on the centerpieces a little at a time and have them ready in advance rather than staying up working on them the night before the wedding. It isn't much cheaper in monetary terms, but  saved me a whole lot of stress.
EDIT: i totally missed where you asked for advice on using them, not whether or not they were a good idea. My advice for working with them is to never accept how they are displayed in the store as how they are meant to look. For example, most of the flowers I wanted came in bunches (bachelor's buttons, blue cosmos, blue lilac), but i wanted a more handpicked look, so I cut all the stems apart and mixed them up.
Also, a little extra greenery in the bottom of your vases will help the arrangements hold their shape without having goofy floral foam showing through the glass.
